Spiral ClockThis is my homage to a fantastic design by Will Aspinall and Neil Lambeth (www.thespiralclock.com). In an effort to understand how this clock worked I decided to make my own! My clock runs off a single C-Cell battery and quartz movement which powers a wooden gear which in turn rotates the whole clock face. The wooden ball travels up the spiral and drops though the centre of the clock at 12 O'clock and falls through a few wooden runners making a satisfying noise on the way down before reappearing at the bottom of the clock face. The clock is made from Oak and Plywood with Wenge-faced numbers.
I had to devise a method for shaping the spiral pathway. It's actually made from 2 strips of iron-on oak laminate placed back to back. I then re-purposed my wife's hair straighteners to apply heat to both sides of the laminate allowing me to bend the strip into shape. |
